TONY HAWK

Tony Hawk stepped onto his first skateboard when he was nine years old. Two years later, he was sponsored, and two years after that, in 1981, he turned professional.

Tony dominated the professional skateboarding contest circuit for the next 18 years, placing first or second in almost every major skateboard contest he entered. He has traveled the world and won every series of skate contests, including the National Skateboard Association series, ESPN's X Games, the Munster contest series in Germany and Vans Triple Crown Hard Rock World Championships. An article in Gravity magazine stated: "From the time he was 16 and declared the National Skateboard Association's first world champion until the NSA folded 12 years later, he never lost his title as the world's best vertical skateboarder." At the 1999 X Games in San Francisco, Hawk made history (and every major national newspaper) when he landed the "900," a two-and-a-half rotation mid-air flip above the lip of a vert ramp. It's a trick that has eluded skateboarders for more than a decade and caused a variety of injuries including broken ribs and compressed vertebras. Hawk is the only skater to land it ,ever, and has landed it numerous times since.

Hawk retired from competition in 1999 at age 31, but don't expect him to be moving to a golf community in Florida. In addition to concentrating more of his time on his companies-900 Films, Birdhouse Skateboards, Hawk Clothing and Hawk Shoes-Hawk entertains a calendar packed full of demonstrations, tours, films, and television appearances. Much more than merely a dominant contest skater, Hawk is the most visible link between the fickle extreme-sports world and the mainstream audience. It's a delicate juggling act that both skaters and executives appreciate. "We needed someone to latch onto, an ambassador," X Games Marketing Director Chris Stiepock told the Los Angeles Times in June 1999. "We needed to create heroes, just like the other sports. The NBA needs to promote Tim Duncan to sell the NBA finals. We needed Tony." In 2001, Tony was named "Best Male Athlete" at Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards over Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neil, and Tiger Woods, and "Choice Male Athlete" at Fox's Teen Choice Awards for the third year in a row.

MIKE VALLELY
Mike Vallely was born on June 29, 1970 in the flat sprawling township of Edison, New Jersey. He grew up the middle child of a working class family. Growing up Mike immersed himself in comic books, martial arts films and his imagination. He was a fan of Elvis Presley and Kiss and daydreamed of one day being a rock star or super hero.

When Mike was fourteen years old he got his first skateboard for Christmas. In June of 1986 Mike was "discovered" and sponsored by Powell Peralta in the parking lot of Mt. Trashmore in Virginia Beach, Virginia. In July of 1986 Mike won the NSA National Amateur Championship in Oceanside, California and overnight became one of the biggest names in the sport. In 1987 Mike turned professional and in 1988 his first signature model skateboard was released by Powell Peralta.

Early in his career Mike was noted for his unorthodox "east coast" style, his street-plant variations and his creative approach to skateboarding. He created his own look (shaved head and army surplus cargo pants) that was and is to this day emulated by skaters world wide. In 1988 Mike moved to California and met and began dating his future wife, Ann.

In 1989 Mike left Powell Peralta and together with Steve Rocco and Rodney Mullen formed World Industries Skateboards, forever changing the skateboard world. That same year Mike released his "barnyard deck" which was and is the prototype for all modern skateboard shapes.

In May of 1992 Mike and Ann were married and later that year on December 29 their first daughter Emily was born.Through the early to mid nineties Mike grew disillusioned with the skateboard industry but continued to tour the world with friend and fellow pro Ed Templeton. During this time Mike solidified his place at the grass roots level in skateboarding through his continuous touring while all along changing sponsors and affiliations many times over and falling out of favor with many in the skateboard industry.

In 1995 while skating and working for Powell Skateboards Mike won the 1st Annual Skatepark of Tampa Professional Contest re-establishing his presence and relevance in the skateboard industry.

In 1998 Etnies released Mike's first pro model shoe and later that year Mike began riding for John Lucero's Black Label Skateboards, it was a perfect match. Almost overnight Black Label became one of the biggest brands in the industry and Mike once again one of the biggest names in the sport.

In 2000 Etnies released Mike's biographydocumentary video entitled 'Sponsored' which focused on Mike's life story and his history in the sport.

In 2001 he followed it up with another documentary video, the 411 release 'Stand Strong' that focused on his extensive touring. 2001 also saw the birth of Mike and Ann's second daughter, Lucinda Marie on September 16.

He's a warrior, a poet... a man to look up to, admire and aspire to be like. He continues to tour the world over, spreading his message of individuality, self expression and self respect. He speaks at schools and works extensively with kids all over the world. He gives of himself to skateboarding, young people and his community. He's a family man, a skateboarder and to many, a hero.
